Discover Hamburg’s Delicious Side at the Chocolate Museum: A Sweet Adventure Awaits!

September 16, 2024

Did you know that Hamburg is home to a chocolate museum called “CHOCOVERSUM”?

Germany is a chocolate lover’s paradise, with an abundance of high-quality chocolate found everywhere, from supermarkets to local shops♡ But Hamburg, as a major port city or chocolate capital in Germany, is particularly special because it’s one of the key entry points for cocoa beans imported from Africa and South America.

At CHOCOVERSUM, you’ll not only learn about how chocolate is made but also indulge in tastings along the way. In this blog,

I’ll guide you through the museum experience, ticket details, and some money-saving tips to help you get the most out of your visit.

This post is perfect for you if:

• You’re planning a trip to Hamburg
• You’re looking for activities near the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt district
• You love chocolate and other sweet treats
• You’re curious about the health benefits of cacao
• You’re considering where to travel in Germany

What to Expect at CHOCOVERSUM

Visitors to the Chocolate Museum can enjoy a 90-minute guided tour with two key experiences:

・A guided tasting session where you learn about chocolate-making.
・Creating your very own custom chocolate bar!

Tours are available in both English and German at specific times, so make sure to book your spot in advance.

A guided tasting and learning session

During the guided tour, you’ll learn about the journey of cocoa beans from their origins to becoming delicious chocolate bars. The best part? You have tastings at every stage! From bitter cocoa beans to sweet, rich chocolate, you’ll taste how the flavors evolve throughout the production process.

One highlight is the chance to taste fresh cacao fruit—though only a few lucky participants get to try it, so raise your hand when the guide asks who’s interested! The flavor might surprise you, with tropical notes that are far from what you’d expect from chocolate: ))

FYI, the chocolate taste is affected by the trees which are near the cacao trees.
For example, if cacao beans grew up near banana trees the beans taste like bananas somewhat.

This is just an example of what you can learn from this tour!

Make Your Own Chocolate Bar

Midway through the tour, you’ll step into a room filled with decorations and toppings where you can create your own chocolate bar. You can choose from dark, milk, or white chocolate, and personalize it with toppings of your choice before it’s cooled and set.

Write down your name on the pink mold so that you can recognize which is yours: )

While your chocolate bar is chilling, the rest of the tour continues, and by the end, you’ll receive your very own custom-made treat to take home!

Summary and my review

CHOCOVERSUM offers a fun and learningful experience that both adults and children can enjoy. It’s a great way to learn about chocolate production and create your own treats.
For me, the ratio of the chocolate bar ingredients was great information to make healthier sweet options at home.
If you’re planning a trip to Hamburg, be sure to add this museum to your itinerary for a delicious adventure!
